Read this before you read anything else on this site that mentions a dollar figure.
The one-sentence version
Nothing on this site is a promise, guarantee, or typical representation of what you will earn. Every income figure you see here — in a method guide, a platform review, or a blog post — is an example, a range, or a plausible outcome for someone with specific circumstances, not a prediction about yours.
Why this matters more here than on most sites
"How to make money online" is a category with real regulatory scrutiny, and for good reason: it's also a category full of people who exaggerate outcomes to sell a course, a tool, or a dream. We'd rather be the boring, accurate site than the exciting, misleading one.
What affects what you actually earn
Every method on this site depends on factors specific to you that we have no way of knowing or controlling:
- Your existing skills and how fast you can build new ones.
- The time you can realistically commit, and how consistently.
- Market conditions — demand for your skill, competition on a platform, seasonal shifts, and rates that change over time.
- Where you're located — payment access, tax treatment, and even which platforms are available to you vary by country.
- Plain luck — timing, who sees your first gig application, which algorithm changes hit which week.
Two people following the same method page can have completely different outcomes, and that's expected, not a sign either of them did it wrong.
How to read a figure on this site
When a method or platform page mentions a specific income number, it's doing one of these things, and we try to be clear about which:
- Illustrating a range reported publicly by a platform, a labour statistic, or common industry pricing (e.g. "freelance writers on Upwork commonly charge $20–60/hour depending on experience and niche") — not a promise you'll land in that range immediately.
- Describing the author's own experience, clearly attributed as one person's result, not a typical or average outcome.
- Citing a platform's own stated numbers (payout thresholds, minimum rates), which is about the platform's mechanics, not a forecast of your earnings on it.
Any page discussing specific figures also carries an inline reminder pointing back to this page.
What we will never do
- Promise a guaranteed income, "passive income while you sleep" stated as certain, or a specific dollar figure tied to a specific time period as if it applies to everyone.
- Publish fabricated earnings screenshots, invented testimonials, or "success stories" that didn't happen.
- Frame recruiting other people into a program as a primary way to earn — a pattern common to MLM-style schemes that draws real regulatory attention, and one we deliberately avoid.
Tax and legal responsibility
Any income you earn through a method described on this site is likely taxable in your jurisdiction, and reporting and paying that tax is your responsibility, not ours. See our blog post on tracking online income and taxes for the basics, and talk to a local accountant for anything specific to your situation.
