Ranked by how many of your answers each method meets, using the ratings on each method page. We never suggest trading or crypto as an income method. No result is a promise of income.
This tool is provided for general information. Results depend on what you enter and are not professional advice.
The short answer
The quiz compares your answers about money, weekly hours, skills and how soon you need income with the ratings published on each of our method pages. It ranks the methods that fit best, and for any that miss, it tells you exactly what they miss. It never suggests trading or crypto, and no result is a promise of income.
Picking a way to make money online is harder than it should be, mostly because the loudest advice comes from people selling something. This quiz does the opposite. It asks five plain questions and checks your answers against the ratings we already publish on each method page, so the shortlist comes from the same evidence you can read for yourself.
How to use the quiz
- Answer each question. The buttons update the results instantly.
- Read the shortlist on the right, in order.
- Open any method to read the full guide, including its costs, risks and realistic timeline.
There is nothing to sign up for, and your answers are not stored or sent anywhere.
What the questions mean
Money to start. How much you can afford to spend, and risk, before anything comes back. Our methods rate their startup cost as low, medium or high.
Hours a week. The effort each method needs. A method rated high in effort will not work on a few hours a week.
Skills today. Some methods need a marketable skill from the start, while others let you learn as you go.
How soon you need income. This matters more than most people admit. Some methods can pay within weeks. Others, such as content sites and channels, usually take many months before they earn anything.
What you would like to do. Working with clients, creating content, selling products, doing simple tasks, or growing money you already have. It breaks ties between methods that fit equally well.
How the ranking works
For each method, the quiz checks four limits: startup cost, effort, skill needed and how quickly it typically pays. A method that stays within all four "fits everything you told us". A method that breaks one or more is shown as "a close fit" with the reason spelled out, for example that it takes more hours than you can give. Methods are then ordered by how few limits they break, then by whether they match what you said you would like to do, and then by lower risk, meaning cheaper and faster first.
That means the quiz always answers. If your answers are very strict, only one method may fit fully, and the next ones will show what they miss. That is a useful result, because it tells you which limit is doing the most work. Relax it, such as by allowing a few more hours, and see how the list changes.
Two things the quiz will not do
Recommend trading or crypto. They are speculative, most beginners lose money, and neither is a dependable way to earn an income. Our guides to them exist so people can understand the risks, not to steer anyone into them.
Promise money. The ratings are general. Your skills, market, luck and effort will change the outcome, and every income figure on this site is an example, not a promise. Read our earnings disclaimer for how to interpret any number you see here.
What to do with your shortlist
Read the full guide for your top one or two, and pay attention to the sections on costs, timelines and who each method does not suit. Before you pay for anything, run the offer through our online income scam checker. To put numbers on an idea, use the side hustle income goal calculator or the ROI calculator. For more on choosing, see our article on which online income method fits you and our overview of realistic ways to make money online.
Common mistakes
Ignoring how long it takes. Many methods pay slowly, and running out of patience is the commonest reason people quit.
Choosing by the highest imagined income. Pick what you can sustain.
Treating one quiz as a decision. It is a way to narrow a long list, not to end the research.
Pretending you have more time or skill than you do. Honest answers give useful results.
Paying before checking. Anything that costs money deserves a quick look at the warning signs first.
Assumptions and limits
The quiz relies on the general ratings published on each method page, which are simplifications. It knows nothing about your country, your circumstances, local rules or the current state of any market, and it does not measure your aptitude. It uses the ratings as they stand today, so it will change as our method pages are updated. It is general information, not advice.
Frequently asked questions
How does the quiz choose its results?
It turns your answers into limits on money to start, weekly hours, skill and time-to-first-income, then checks each method against them using the ratings shown on its page. Methods are ranked by how many of your limits they meet, then by whether they match what you said you would like to do, then by lower risk. There is no hidden scoring.
Why does it sometimes show methods that do not fully fit?
Because the honest answer to some combinations, such as no money, few hours, no skills and a need for fast income, is that very little fits everything. Rather than hide that, it shows the closest options and states what each one misses, so you can decide whether to relax one of your limits.
Why are trading and crypto never suggested?
Speculative trading and crypto are not reliable ways to earn income, and most beginners lose money at them. We would rather not steer anyone towards them as an earning method. You can still read our cautious guides to them, but the quiz will not recommend them.
Is this a personality test or a promise of income?
Neither. It is a filter over general ratings, and your circumstances will differ. Treat the result as a shortlist to read about, not as advice or a prediction of what you will earn. Our earnings disclaimer explains how to read every figure on this site.
How we keep this calculator accurate
The formulas on this page are standard arithmetic, written out in full above so you can check them. Each one is covered by automated tests that compare the calculator against independently worked examples and round-trip checks, and the worked example is generated by the same code as the calculator. We use no third-party data, exchange rates or fee tables, because those go stale; fees and rates are always numbers you enter. If you spot a mistake or an assumption that does not fit your situation, please tell us. Our earnings disclaimer and editorial approach explain how the site works.
